What does 1 Timothy 6:10 mean?

1 Timothy 6:10 is a warning about the heart, not a condemnation of currency. Paul is writing to Timothy about false teachers who think "godliness is a means to financial gain" (1 Timothy 6:5).

"The love of money" (philargyria) — It is the affection, the craving, the obsession with wealth that is dangerous. Money itself is neutral; it is a tool. But when it becomes an ultimate love, it becomes an idol.

"A root of all kinds of evil" — The Greek text lacks the definite article "the," meaning it is "a root," not the only root. And it leads to "all kinds of evil" (pasōn tōn kakōn), not every single evil in the world. Greed can fuel betrayal, theft, murder, lying, and pride.

"Wandered from the faith" — This is the spiritual danger. The pursuit of wealth competes with the pursuit of God. Jesus said, "You cannot serve both God and money" (Matthew 6:24). When you chase money, you often drift from truth.

"Pierced themselves with many griefs" — The imagery is of self-inflicted torture. The griefs of greed include anxiety, broken relationships, moral compromise, and emptiness. The pursuit of "more" never ends and never satisfies.

Paul's antidote follows in verse 11: "Flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness." The cure for the love of money is not poverty, but contentment and a reordered heart.
