What does 2 Timothy 3:1 mean?

2 Timothy 3:1 sets the stage for one of the bleakest descriptions of human depravity in the New Testament. Paul is preparing Timothy for ministry in a world that is hostile to truth.

"Mark this" — Or "understand this." Paul wants Timothy to be realistic, not naive. Ministry will be hard.

"The last days" — In the New Testament, this phrase usually refers to the entire period between Christ's first coming and His return. We have been in the "last days" for 2,000 years, though the intensity may increase as the end approaches.

"Terrible times" — The Greek word for "terrible" (chalepos) implies something hard to bear, dangerous, or savage. It is used elsewhere to describe violent demon-possessed men (Matthew 8:28). It suggests a society that is wild, untamed, and menacing.

Paul goes on in verses 2-5 to describe exactly what makes these times so terrible. It isn't just wars or famines; it's a catalogue of selfishness: "People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy..."

The "perilous times" are caused by the corruption of the human heart. When people love themselves more than God, society becomes dangerous. Paul's instruction is not to panic or retreat, but to "continue in what you have learned" (v. 14)—to stay faithful to Scripture despite the cultural decay.
