What does Proverbs 3:5-6 mean?

Understanding Proverbs 3:5-6

Proverbs 3:5-6 is one of the most practical wisdom passages in the Bible. King Solomon, traditionally credited as the author, contrasts two approaches to life: trusting God completely versus relying on your own reasoning.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart" — the Hebrew word for trust (batach) means to throw yourself upon something, to rely on it fully. "All your heart" excludes half-measures. This is total dependence.

"Lean not on your own understanding" — this is not anti-intellectual. The Hebrew word for "lean" (sha'an) means to support yourself on something as a weight-bearing structure. Solomon is saying: don't treat your own reasoning as the foundation for your life decisions. Your perspective is limited; God's is not.

"In all your ways submit to him" — literally "know Him" or "acknowledge Him" in every area of life. This means bringing God into every decision, relationship, and plan — not just the "spiritual" ones.

"He will make your paths straight" — the Hebrew yeshar means to make level, smooth, or direct. God does not promise an easy path, but a clear one. When you surrender direction to God, He removes unnecessary obstacles and guides you toward His purposes.

This passage does not promise that life will be simple. It promises that when you stop trying to navigate by your own limited map, God provides a better one.
